What causes split ends?
If you have ever wondered what causes split ends, today is the day your questions are answered. I took it upon myself to do some research and figure out exactly what causes split ends. Truth is there is no one specific thing that causes them. There is a variety of different factors that could cause split ends. The way you style your hair (tight buns or ponytails), products you use, hot tools, and environmental conditions to name a few.
Split ends are the result of fraying (hair breaks apart) or splitting of the hair fiber. They come in different types, the most common being the double split (looks like a Y as shown below), where your hair strand splits into two ends. Split ends occur when your ends become dry and/or brittle. When your outer layer (the cuticle) is damaged your hair is exposed to further damage. When your hair is damaged your ends are more likely to peel away and leave your hair looking frizzy and more prone to breaking and splitting.
To sum up, once your ends are damaged the only way to get rid of them is by getting a trim. This doesn’t mean that just because your split ends are irreversible you shouldn’t take care of your hair. Keep on reading to figure out how you can prevent your hair from being damaged.

How do you know when it’s time to get a trim?
If you notice that the ends of your hair are dry, rough, uneven, and hard to comb through, these are signs that you need to get a trim. Make sure to let your hair stylist know that you only want a minimal cut (less than 2 inches) to get rid of your split ends. Getting trims often is going to help make sure your hair grows healthier and thicker.
If you avoid getting frequent cuts it doesn’t necessarily mean that your hair will stop growing, in fact, your hair will continue to grow but you run the risk of your split ends becoming weak and not holding your body’s natural shape. If you wait too long to get a trim your split ends will work their way up causing more damage to your hair.
