Having a skincare routine is essential and making sure you accommodate it to the weather is so important to make sure your skin is moisturized and hydrated. Otherwise, you end up with dry/ rough skin and/or chapped lips.
Here is the ultimate list of skin care products and items you need to make sure you are prepared for the winter. Along with the best winter skincare tips.
This post is all about winter skincare.
Face Moisturizer
During the winter you want to change out your summer moisturizer and look for a thicker moisturizer (while considering your skin type) to help keep your skin hydrated. Look for moisturizing elements like emollients (make your skin smooth and soft) and humectants (attract water from the air) found in products.
You also want to look for ingredients like….
- Glycerin: moisturizes and softens skin
- Hyaluronic acid: maintains moisture
- Vitamin E: helps nourish and protect skin
- Niacinamide: improves skin hydration
Body Moisturizer
Just like your face needs moisture so does the rest of your body. It is recommended that you apply moisturizer twice a day or as needed to help keep your skin hydrated. During the winter the air dries out and your body cannot hold onto moisture, causing your skin to dry. Make sure to apply moisturizer to all your body (elbows, knees, legs, arms) as they tend to dry out easily. Some professions (dishwashers, and hairdressers) require you to wash your hands often so you are more likely to have dry hands. A good moisturizer to use for your body during the winter is CeraVee. It is suited for all skin types and contains hyaluronic acid to provide 24hrs of hydration.
Lips
Chapped lips are a common thing in the winter due to exposure to cold air. However, if you tend to lick your lips often that is another reason why your lips are chapped. When you lick your lips you are removing your lip’s natural oil and adding saliva. Saliva temporarily adds moisture to your lips and as result, ends up causing them to be drier. So you want to avoid licking your lips and instead use a product like a lip balm, a chapstick, or a lip scrub to add moisture to your lips. Below are 3 suggestions you can try.
- Replenishes irritated lips
- Provides all-day moisture
- Organic natural ingredients
- Exfoliates & moisturizes
- Leaves lip feeling smooth
- Instantly soften lips
- Gives your lips a sheer pink tint
- Affordable
Stay Hydrated
Most of your body is made from water, so ensuring you drink enough water throughout the day is important to ensure your body stays hydrated. Especially during the winter. In the winter because it’s cold we tend to lean towards warm beverages like coffee or tea making it more difficult to drink water. In addition, not drinking enough water in the winter can cause dehydration.
During wintertime, water is going to help keep you warm, boost your immune system and give your body support to fight off the cold or flu. So remember to drink water and stay hydrated!
Wear SPF
Believe it or not, SPF is still needed during the wintertime. It is recommended that you use SPF all year round. You may be asking yourself but there’s no sun in the winter why do I need to add sunscreen? The reason being is that UVB rays are present year-round and are harmful during the winter. UVB rays reflect off surfaces like snow or ice, exposing your skin twice. Wearing sunscreen during the winter is going to protect your skin from sunburn, aging, and skin cancer.
Ingredients to look for in sunscreen during the wintertime….
- SPF 30 or higher
- Hyaluronic acid: helps keep your skin hydrated
- Glycerin: moisturizes and softens skin
Haircare
Just like we need to protect our skin we also need to protect our hair and I don’t just mean using a heat protectant when using hot tools. You want to protect your hair from the cold. Avoid leaving the house with wet hair. The air outside is cold and the air inside is warm which can cause your hair to freeze and be more prone to split ends. Not only is this bad for your hair but you could also get sick and catch a cold or the flu. Use a leave-in conditioner to help protect your hair from the cold and dry air outside.
Again, look for products that contain moisturizing elements like emollients and humectants to keep your hair hydrated and lock in moisture. A good leave-in conditioner to use is the Ouai Detangliging leave-in conditioner. It is going to provide your hair with enough moisture without weighing it down.
These aren’t per se winter skincare items but trust me if you are always cold these are lifesavers and must-have products.
Hot hands: OMG! Ever since I was introduced to this product it has been a lifesaver. If your hands are always cold this product is for you. It’s safe, easy to use, multipurpose, long-lasting, and keeps your hands warm.
Cozy blanket: A blanket is a must-have item in the wintertime. This one, in particular, is perfect because it’s soft on both sides, comfy, and keeps you warm without breaking a sweat.
Gloves: Always keep a pair of gloves handy. The cold and the wind can strip your body of the natural oils that protect your skin. Wearing gloves is going to keep your hands warm and from getting dry. Another great benefit about these gloves is that they are touchscreen compatible so you can use your phone without having to take them off.
Fuzzy Warm socks: Not only are these socks cute but they also help keep your toes warm and sweat-free.
Beanies: An excellent way to protect your hair is by wearing a beanie. Not only that but it is also going to help keep your ears warm.
Humidifier: A humidifier is going to help your overall health during the winter. The outdoor air causes the air inside your house to be drier which is bad for your skin, nails, and hair. So placing a humidifier is going to help hydrate and add moisture to the air.
TIPS
- Keep an extra sweater in your car, you never know how cold it can get. Trust me on this one!
- Always carry a travel-size moisturizer & apply as needed
- Avoid sharing your lip balm, it can increase the chances of getting an infection
