Hair Growth Facts

According to The American Academy of Dermatology, your hair grows about ½ inch per month on average, which is about 6 inches per year. If you think about it, it’s not that much especially when you are growing out your hair, it can seem like forever 😫….scratch that it does take forever! Note that growing your hair out is a long process. There’s no quick solution and it’s not going to happen overnight. Unless you get extensions or put a wig on.

The growth of your hair also depends on factors such as….

  • Genetics
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Hormones

Methods to Practice for Hair Growth

Even though there is no proven scientific formula for instant hair growth, there are methods you can try to help make your hair grow. If you want beautiful, long thick hair you need to be patient and trust the process.

1. Limit the use of hot tools

Using hot tools on an everyday basis and on a high setting can cause your hair to become brittle, dry, and cause damage to your hair. Instead, try hairstyles that don’t involve heat tools such as a braid or leaving your natural hair down. If you must use a heat tool make sure to use a heat protectant and use it on a low setting.

2. Use a shampoo and conditioner that works well for your hair type

Remember that everyone has different hair types so use products that are going to work best for your hair. If you have straight hair use products that are suited for straight hair, same thing for wavy or curly hair. When choosing a shampoo and a conditioner look for ingredients that contain aloe vera or apricot kernel oil to give your hair moisture and hydration.

3. Avoid washing your hair every day

This might seem kind of gross but you shouldn’t wash your hair every day.  Washing your hair too often can remove natural oils that your body produces and will leave your hair feeling dry and brittle.

The amount of times you wash your hair depends on your hair type, scalp texture, activity level (exercise), and how oily your hair gets. If you have dry hair, frequent washing can cause your hair to damage and a dry itchy scalp. If you have oily hair and you rarely wash it, your hair will look oily.

In any case the standard hair washing is 2 or 3 times per week.

4. Limit the number of times you dye your hair

Dying your hair too often can make your hair brittle and dry over time. Here are 2 options that are considered less damaging to your hair.

  • Ammonia-free hair color: it will be kinder and gentler on your hair
  • Consider a balayage hairstyle: only applied midway to the ends of your hair. This is a better option because it involves fewer retouch ups and it is healthier for your hair. As a person who dyes their hair frequently this is the option I stick to.

5. Avoid brushing hair when wet

When your hair is wet it is very delicate and vulnerable. A brush is going to pull your hair from the roots and cause split ends. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair. A wide-tooth comb is going to reduce frictions and prevent breakage. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

6. Use products for hair growth

Another method you want to try is products that are specifically meant to help your hair grow. Look for products that have ingredients like collagen, caffeine, and biotin.

I recently started using Vegamour Serum and I can’t see a difference yet since I have only been using it for a week. According to their website it takes about 3-4 months to see results. I’ll have to keep you updated on this one. 😜

There are various products such as serums and oils in the hair industry that are meant to help with hair growth but this is the one I choose. Below are some of the reasons why I decided to try the Vegamour Serum.

  • Works on all hair types and textures
  • Helps with dandruff
  • It’s water-based
  • Ingredients are plant-based and non-toxic
  • Safe to use on dyed hair

If you do decide to try out a product for hair growth make sure to do your research before trying the product or talk to a professional.

7. Give your scalp a massage with oil

Giving your scalp a massage with your fingers or with a scalp massager can also help increase hair growth, stimulate hair follicles and promote circulation. On the plus side, it’s super relaxing.😌

8.  Get Frequent Trims

This one makes sense but if you’re like me you won’t want to cut your hair. Since your hair grows from the roots, I used to believe that the ends of your hair had nothing to do with your hair growth. Girl, was I wrong and had no idea what I was thinking. If you want to grow out your hair and have healthy, natural hair you NEED to get frequent haircuts. It is suggested to get a haircut every 6 months. Frequent trims will prevent breakage and make your hair look fuller and healthier.

TIPS

  • When drying your hair use a microfiber towel instead of a cotton towel it will be more gentle with your hair
  • Invest in a silk pillowcase: going to help your hair be healthier and frizz-free
  • Reduce stress: can cause hair loss
  • Avoid buns or tight hairstyles: this damages the hair follicles resulting in hair loss

TAKEAWAYS

  1. Everyone has a different hair type, so you must consider what products work best for your hair. Not all products are suitable for everyone. Test, Test, Test!
  2. When looking for a shampoo for hair growth look for products that contain aloe vera or apricot kernel oil.
  3. Healthy-looking hair is in general a sign of good health and good hair care practices.
  4. Focus your shampoo on the roots of your hair (scalp) and conditioner on the ends.
