What causes puffy eyes?
Puffy eyes are caused when the tissue structures and muscles supporting your eyelids weaken (Griff, 2021). This may cause the skin under your eye to start to sag and the fat around your eye to shift into the area below your eyes. This area can then gather fluid, hence causing puffy or swollen under eyes. Below is a list of factors that can help you determine the cause of your under eyes.
- Alcohol
- Lack of sleep
- Allergies
- Salty foods
- Not removing makeup before going to sleep
- Crying
- Aging
Note: If you are still unsure about what is causing your puffy eyes make sure to check in with your healthcare provider so they can do a thorough exam and help you determine what is causing your puffy eyes.
Now that you have a little more understanding of what causes puffy eyes. Here are 4 home remedies that you can try at home to get rid of puffy eyes.
1. Metal Spoon
Using a metal spoon is a trick that has been used for quite a while now and is safe to do. Using a cold compress like a metal spoon is going to help shrink the blood vessels under your eyes. This is going to help improve the appearance of dark circles and minimize puffiness. This home remedy is literally the easiest and fastest way to help with the appearance of puffy eyes.
What to do
- Place a metal spoon in the freezer and leave for about 15 minutes
- After the time is up, remove it from the freezer
- Take your metal spoon and apply the round part of the spoon over your closed eyelid
- Gently glide the spoon in an outward motion (repeat this step for about about 6-7 times)
2. Coffee grounds
Next is coffee grounds. This one isn’t much of a shocker as it’s already used in some beauty products. Like a cold compress, caffeine helps shrink blood vessels. Coffee grounds are a great ingredient to use for your under eyes as the properties it contains can help reduce swelling and the appearance of dark circles.
What to do
- Take freshly brewed grounds and gently rub them onto your under eyes
- As you’re rubbing the grounds, avoid getting too close to your eyes to avoid getting any coffee grounds into your eyes (this can cause irritation)
- Massage the coffee grounds onto your under eyes & make sure to distribute the grounds evenly
- Once applied, leave it on for about 20 minutes
- After the time is up, rinse the area with cool water
3. Green Tea bags
Another great home remedy to try is applying green tea bags under your eyes. Green Tea in particular is going to benefit your entire body, including your under eyes. As it is packed with antioxidants like Vitamin C and E. For your under eyes, applying green tea bags can help reduce inflammation, and improve the appearance of your eyes by brightening the skin and reducing dark circles.
What to do
- Make 2 small bags of tea like you normally would when you make tea to drink
- Gently remove the tea bags & squeeze out the excess tea from the bags
- Let them cool off for about 15 minutes
- Then apply one tea bag to each eye and leave for about 15-20 minutes
- After the time is up, rinse the area with cool water
4. Potato Slices
Last but not least is potato slices. Now with this home remedy, I’m not going to lie, when I first heard about it I was a bit shocked too. But after reading all the benefits, how could it hurt to try applying potato slices under your eyes? Potatoes are not only a vegetable that can be used to make delicious meals but can also be used as a beauty hack. Potatoes are rich in vitamins like Vitamin C which is an antioxidant that can help brighten up your skin. Applying potato slices directly to your eyes can help reduce the swelling and dark circles.
What to do
- First, take 1 potato and refrigerate for about an hour
- Take out the potato and cut 2 thin pieces (big enough to cover your entire eye)
- Next, apply one slice to each eye & leave for about 15 minutes
- After the time is up, rinse the area with cool water
- Repeat process 1-2 a week to see the results
TIPS
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid rubbing your eyes
- Make sure you are getting enough sleep
- Be gentle around your under-eye area, as this is the most delicate part of your skin
