One of my biggest insecurities was and is dandruff. I wouldn’t want anyone to know that I had dandruff because it was embarrassing. The worst part about it was the itching and the visibility.
I now know that it is common and other people also have dandruff. I thought I’d share with you what I do to treat my dandruff.
Here are some of my favorite products for dandruff solutions and some that I personally use on my hair.
This post is all about dandruff solutions.
Dandruff Overview
Before we jump into it I want to give you a short overview of what dandruff is and why we get it. Make sure to stick around till the end when I will be sharing with you tips that will help your scalp be dandruff free.
Dandruff occurs when small pieces of dry skin flake off your scalp. Causes for dandruff happen when you have dry skin, irritated oily skin, or if you are sensitive to hair products. A dry scalp occurs when your hair is not receiving enough moisture. This could happen due to washing your hair too often or using products that are not suitable for your hair type. If you notice that a product is irritating your skin, STOP using it!
To identify what is causing your scalp to flake you should consider the below.
- Products you are using
- # of times you wash your hair
- Dry skin
- Moisture
- Other skin conditions
Once you have identified what is causing your dandruff you want to make sure to treat it by using the right products that are suitable for your hair type. If you’re still unsure what is causing your dandruff you can talk with a professional like a dermatologist.
Dandruff Solutions
1. Wash your hair with a scalp scrub and use it once a week. A scalp scrub will help exfoliate, detoxify and moisturize your scalp. The one I use is called Kyn. You can apply it with your fingers or a scalp scrubber brush.
2. Use a serum every time you wash your hair. A serum is going to help with dandruff by removing any scalp buildup and leaving your scalp dandruff free. Not only is it going to help with dandruff but it’s also going to help control frizzy hair, boost smoothness, reduce tangles and promote shine.
3. Another solution to dandruff is by using a shampoo that is specifically formulated for dandruff. When you’re looking to buy a shampoo look for ingredients like tea tree oil, salicylic acid (which will help exfoliate and remove flakes), and pyrithione zinc (an active ingredient that combats dandruff and itchiness). Here is a product that contains both ingredients, it’s called Kiehl’s Scalp Purifying Dandruff Shampoo.
4. Use extra virgin olive oil, oil is a natural moisturizer that will provide moisture to your scalp and prevent it from flaking. You can apply the oil directly on your scalp or mix it in with other ingredients to create a hair mask. Below is a list of supplies and instructions on the hair mask I use. This is a DIY (do-it-yourself) hair mask I came across on my social media accounts and I thought I’d give it a go. At first, it sounded kind of weird but you have to try it! It makes your hair feel super soft and shiny! On the plus side, there are great benefits in using all of these ingredients for your hair.
Facts about the Ingredients in the Hair Mask
Eggs: So it’s no surprise that eggs are an ingredient needed for this DIY hair mask. Eggs contain vitamins A and E, biotin, and healthy fats which are great ingredients for making your hair grow and be less prone to breakage. Another benefit to using eggs in a hair mask is that they remove dead skin and help with the itchy flakes.
Mayonnaise: Honestly, this ingredient is the one that had me thinking it was a bit weird. Who wants to apply mayonnaise to their hair?🤨 Truth is mayonnaise contains a variety of different oils that will help hydrate and nourish your scalp.
Honey: This ingredient is also great for your hair because it is going to help with hair breakage, hair loss, retaining moisture, and hair growth. Honey is also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory which is going to help fight dandruff and keep your scalp looking good. Overall honey is a great natural product for your hair.
Extra virgin olive oil: As mentioned above oil works as a natural moisturizer that is going to provide moisture to your hair but also helps strengthen the hair shaft (hair seen beyond the surface of the skin).
Supplies you will need
- 2 eggs
- 1 tbsp mayo
- 1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive oil
- 1 tbsp Honey
- Small bowl
- Whisk
- Hair dye brush
Instructions
1. Pour the eggs into the bowl and whisk them in.
2. Add the rest of the ingredients in (mayo, extra virgin olive oil, honey) and whisk all together until all ingredients are mixed in well.
3. Apply it to your scalp with a hair dye brush. You can use your fingers but I find it gets less messy and easier to apply with a dye brush. This is totally up to you.
Here are some tips to note
-
- Make sure to do it over the restroom sink because the consistency is very runny
- Wear a shirt that you don’t mind getting dirty
4. Leave it in for an hour and then wash it off with lukewarm water.
5. This last solution concurs with the one above, using natural oils. Not only are natural oils great for dandruff but overall great for your hair. Remember that you can combine oils and other ingredients to make a hair mask, or by using products that have these natural oils. Here are two products that contain one or more oils and are great to use if you have dandruff. The first one is Mamaearth Tea Tree Oil. Tea tree oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-flammable which is going to help treat dandruff and overall improve your scalp health. The second is CurlSmith Moisture Memory Reactivator. This product contains more than one type of oil. This contains coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, and olive oil. It even has aloe vera and glycerin which are all great ingredients for hydrating and moisturizing your hair.
TIPS
- Use natural oils such as tea tree oil, coconut oil, and aloe vera gel
- Use products that contain salicylic acid, this is going to help exfoliate and remove flakes, prevent oil buildup, and reduce inflammation on your scalp
- Eat foods with vitamin B7, it is going to help you have healthy hair, nails, and skin
